At Melbourne's Knowbody Studios, Nia classes are becoming increasingly popular among those tired of the usual timetable fare. These classes blend Yoga, breathing techniques, martial arts, and tribal dance for an alternative that's as energetic as it is eclectic.
Doing the Salute to the Sun with Bono warbling from speaker stacks, swapping the trainers for designer heels or mixing Yoga with dance moves may seem a tad gimmicky, but let's not forget that many of today's popular fitness forms were once considered out there, such as Pilates, which blended moves from gymnastics, yoga, and martial arts in a pioneering stretch and tone routine.
Gimmicky or not, this fusion of fitness and fun clearly has the power of motivation on its side. "I think when it's something you enjoy doing, it also gives you the incentive to stick with it," says Rice.

The concept of finding joy through exercise is a relatively new one, at least in the Western world. A new technique known as Nia encourages finding joy in movement through a blend of Martial arts, dance, and Yoga.
