Jan Gillies

Jan Gillies Nia White Belt InstructorMy gorgeous daughter, Sophie Marsh, introduced me to Nia when she 'brought Nia home' to Brisbane in 2004. At first, it was just a nice way for me to connect with Sophie while doing some regular exercise for the first time ever. Then Nia seduced me and became a necessity in my life, a time and place to find and be me, quell the chatter in my head, and feel GOOD...no, not BE good.

I did my White Belt with Ken Gilbert in 2007 to challenge myself and felt pretty chuffed as the gran of the group. After auditing with inspirational Winalee Zeeb in 2008 I decided to register as a teacher. I’ve been offering Fit’n’Funky Nia sessions during school holidays for girls and boys with Down Syndrome, as well as their siblings and friends. The kids get right into the moves and music, eg doing the 5 Stages of Healing to the Beatles’ Here Comes the Sun.

NEXT CLASSES: Tuesday 19 January and Thursday 21 January 2010.

Down Syndrome children dance Nia

My Nia life owes much to Sophie, Ken and Winalee, and also to the fabulous women I dance with in workshops, jams, White Belt sessions and regular classes. We are a real Nia community sharing the joy and dancing it into our diverse life roles.

Since 1963, I’ve worked as a high school teacher, Principal, Inspector and, in the 1990s, Director in Education Qld. I believe passionately in the universal right to excellent public education. Through my management consultancy I work with visionary leaders and educators who share that passion. I’m committed to helping Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in their fight for better life chances and am a member of ANTaR (Australians for Native Title & Reconciliation). I reckon GetUp is the best thing to happen in Australia this century (so far).

I also love to sing jazz and enjoy gigs at Brisbane Jazz Club, festivals, weddings – anywhere, really.

Love weaves together these threads of my life. The love of my children and grandies fuels, inspires (and sometimes exhausts) me. I dance this joy through Nia and sing it in my song of being.
