Jacinta Birchall Jacinta - Nia Instructor

The last time I experienced being fit and strong was about 20 years ago. Back then, I was a labourer and studied Oki Do Yoga intensively. When I hung up my workboots and started a clothing business, I soon found I had little time for exercise.

I tried the gym for a year but never regained strength or physical confidence and rarely worked up a sweat (due to my intense dislike for exercise machines!!) The only time I worked up a good sweat and got my heart rate up was dancing round my lounge room! I found that I could stay with a particular movement and really work into some particular area of my body…ie: thighs, calves shoulders etc. That became my workout. I gathered a group of friends at a little hall in Badger Creek and got them doing the same and sharing their favourite moves with the group. We had lots of fun and certainly worked out, but the repetitiveness was a little unbalanced and dull. I found myself wanting more….
By early 2006 (my 42nd year) I had a family and two clothing boutiques. Although I weighed 73 kilos and had a chronic back problem I had very little motivation to get fit again. Then I attended my first Nia class. From that moment I knew it was my future. Not just to participate in class but also to teach. I could tell immediately how good it is for me and how incredibly satisfying it is on so many levels. I attended at least one or two classes a week for the next 18 months before completing the White Belt Intensive and licensing to teach the Nia Technique in September 2007.

As a result of bringing Nia into my life, my back problem has gone! Yes…completely gone. My weight is now 64 kilos (and dropping) with little or no change to my diet. My body is noticeably leaner and toned. I have more energy and motivation than I ever remember having. My mind is alert and switched on. My physical confidence has returned and most importantly, my attitude to life and people is once again positive and joyous.

The foundations of Nia are strong and sound and satisfy my personal criteria, for a wholistic method of exercise. It is totally safe and supportive of the body. It allows for personal expression and abilities. It is balanced.

Through moving my body’s way in Nia, I have found health. Join me and begin your own Nia journey toward health.
