I love Nia so much! From the very first moment I walked into Sophie Marsh's Nia class in Brisbane, every part of me said "Yes! I want more! I love this!!!" At first I felt like I had two left feet. I felt constrained by my own inhibitions but the joy expressed by the music and the movement gently coaxed me to let go of self-consciousness, and transform little by little into a dancer, free to be myself. What a boost to self-confidence to be given the permission to move in 'my own body's way' and 'in my own natural time'.

The founding principal of Nia is the Joy of Movement and students are encouraged to tap into the deeper joy that comes with awareness of spirit through sensation. Joy is love moving. Joy is abundant. Joy is available to every body. And it's fun! I feel endlessly grateful to have found such a joyful way of improving my fitness, dancing with friends and family and living my life.

Nia invites every body to move and seek pleasure. There is no pre-requisite of dance or fitness to do it. And it doesn’t matter what it looks like. It’s how it feels to you and your body that really matters. Nia classes provide a safe space to connect with your body and with others, to laugh and to cry, to dance and to heal. It doesn’t matter how young or old you are. Its beauty lies in acceptance of who you are and where you are at on any given day.

Nia brings so many gifts to so many people. It's uplifting, nourishing, expanding, playful, nurturing, inspiring, touching and joyful. I love witnessing the way that people connect to themselves, to each other, to Mother Earth and to the Divine. And I love dancing in a space where people feel safe enough to reveal their hearts and souls.

I coordinate an Adopt-A-Farmer gardening program at my children's school, and like Nia dancers, our cherished farmers, Franco & Michael go barefoot. When I asked Franco why he farms barefoot, he put his hand to his heart and said 'Mate ... connection to Mother Earth'. For me, connection is key. The more I step into my sacred path to share Nia, the more connected I feel to myself and to others. We are all connected!
