Australian Nia Instructors
In Australia, Nia is taught in health clubs, personal training studios, community centres, yoga studios, physiotherapists and local halls. Nia is integrated into health, fitness, child and education sectors by Nia trained professionals in those areas.
In 2007, Nia Australia Incorporated was formed as a non-profit association with the following objectives:
1) To provide a body which furthers teamwork, on-going skills development and training amongst Nia practitioners in Australia. For example, this may be provided through seminars, work-shops and other training forums.
2) To provide a forum for Nia practitioners to share information. For example, this may be provided by an up-dated members email group, a newsletter or a chat line conference email group.
3) To provide a forum for Nia practitioners to educate the public about Nia and its role in improving the community’s health. For example, this may be assisted through the development and maintenance of a website and through demonstration workshops which showcase the technique.
The current executive of Nia Australia Inc. is Sophie Marsh (president), Julie Bartley (vp)
Noël Boycott (treasurer) Melissa Page (secretary).
Nia has been a featured demonstration at Sydney's Mind, Body, Spirit Festival since 2004.
Nia is a wonderful tool for self healing, personal conditioning and nurturing community spirit. Through classes, workshop and events the intention of Nia Australia is to create a healthy community for everybody.
Our most recent event was the fundraiser for Maroondah Breast screening service. Melbourne Nia White Belt Teacher Deborah Shaw presented a talk on body-mind health and gave a Nia demonstration to 150 pink clad supporters. Breast cancer survivors throughout the world use Nia for healing, enjoyment, and social interaction. On the physical level Nia’s organic movements support women to lose weight and reduce the likelihood of Lymphedema. Nia’s integrated and holistic approach centres on the present moment, honours our experience however that is, and re-ignites the pleasure of moving to music.
